Kansas City Poker Tournament Overview
All tournaments are Skill Level 2 except for Harrah's Saturday morning tournament and Ameristar's 1pm tournaments on Monday through Friday. The Ameristar events on weekdays are all Skill Level 4 tournaments, and excellent bankroll-building opportunities for skilled players who use the basic strategy presented in The Poker Tournament Formula. Harrah's Saturday morning tournament is the best regularly-scheduled event in Kansas City, at Skill Level 5, with 40 minute blind levels. Note that you will have to adapt the basic PTF strategy to beat the Harrah's Skill Level 5 event. Exactly how much you will have to adjust the strategy will depend on the exact structure of the
tournament and the types of opponents who dominate the Kansas City fields.
The PTF fundamental principles are still right. You still can't expect to catch enough "good cards" to win with a tight strategy. And a loose theft-based strategy will still beat a tight strategy because of the advantage inherent in building an early chip lead.
But you are going to be facing problems that players in live Skill Level 4 tournaments don't face. For example, you will probably see a lot more limpers pre-flop early in a Skill Level 5 tournament, and a lot more people willing to call if they flop a hand they consider reasonably strong, because people tend to feel they can afford it when they have these extra chips.
As a result of that, you will generally find yourself with too few opportunities to enter the pot if you stick to the PTF basic strategy. Also, when you enter a pot with lots of limpers already in it, the reality is they are going to be hitting stronger hands more often, and you are much more likely to get trapped than you are in a lower Skill Level tournament, where players are likely playing tighter.
