Detroit, Michigan Area Poker Tournaments, with Ratings

Detroit Area Poker Tournament Overview
There are four casinos in the greater Detroit area—three in downtown Detroit, plus the Casino Windsor just across the river in Ontario. I’m listing the Windsor casino as a Detroit area casino as it takes only about 20 minutes to get there from any of the downtown Detroit casinos. Of the Detroit area casinos, only the MGM Grand—the biggest casino in the area—has no poker room and no poker tournaments.
Briefly, the Greektown Casino has an excellent Skill Level 5 tournament Monday through Thursday at 10 am. This tournament has a $100 + $25 buy-in/entry fee, with no rebuys or add-ons. The 30-minute blind levels and smooth structure give it a patience factor of 7.68. The one negative factor about this tourney is the high entry fee (house fee). At a $25 house fee for a $100 buy-in tournament, Greektown is charging too much. On Friday, this tournament costs $50 + $15, has 20-minute blind levels and starts with fewer chips, so it’s only a Skill Level 2 tourney with this less attractive structure. Their Mon-Thur tournaments are the best weekly tourneys you’ll find in Detroit.
The Motor City Casino has the most costly regularly-scheduled weekly tournaments on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, at $225, but they have very fast blind structures and are not good tournaments for skillful players. The patience factor is only 2.82, Skill Level 1. These are strictly amateur events where the lucky cards win. On the first Saturday of each month, Motor City doubles the cost of this tourney to $550, but they do not increase the starting chips or the length of the blinds, so the Skill Level stays at 1. This is the worst structure I’ve ever seen on a tournament with a buy-in cost this high.
If you’re looking for a good no-limit hold'em tournament with a bigger buy-in and a higher Skill Level, the best tournament in the Detroit area is held at noon on the last Friday of each month at the Casino Windsor. This tournament has a $550 buy-in/entry, and is a Skill Level 5 tourney with a patience factor of 9.22. Note that the Casino Windsor costs are in Canadian dollars, so $550 Canadian would be about US$490 at the current exchange rate. The Casino Windsor’s regular Mon-Fri tourneys, however, are all low-skill amateur events.
If I lived in the Detroit area, I’d play the Greektown 10am tourney on Monday through Thursday, then hit the Casino Windsor’s biggie at noon on the last Friday of the month. There are no good regular evening or weekend tournaments in the Detroit area.
